Hey girl!

I am glad you are back. Today, we are talking about how we are identified as CHOSEN!

I am so thankful that I am set free from striving! Why, you ask? Because the world demands A LOT of it from women!!! I am done with striving and fighting to “feel” good enough. I’ve settled it once and for all and I hope you will too.

Is it just me or does nothing feel better than knowing we were chosen at school to play on the best team? To be called by name and to get to come forward in front of our peers because we were chosen. That has really only happened to me a handful of times, but the glory of those moments made me feel like the “cool girl” at school when really I was just a shy, wannabe-accepted kid.

Dear Sister… YOU are chosen and set apart by the King of Kings! Being hand-picked by the Creator sounds too good to be true, and sometimes so far out of reach– what does this mean exactly to you? Today? Being chosen means: being set free from striving, receiving a royal position because of His grace and being called out and set-apart for an eternal purpose.

Chosen means being set free from striving. You can’t earn it– you were chosen and set-apart before the world began so rest assured my sister, you can’t earn or lose your position in Christ. You might not feel very “chosen” because as a female in today’s society it seems that what the world chooses is so much different from what God chooses. Most of the time, the world tries to tell us women that to be chosen we must look it all, be it all and do it all. The striving they promise will lead to being chosen and being chosen will bring us satisfaction, right?! So not true!! Been there, done that! I was exhausted and felt slapped with put-downs all at the same time, walking back to my real self with the realization that I threw out my beliefs for a 5 minute gamble on the world’s silly thoughts of me. I was never enough. I could never keep up. I felt vulnerable, naked and unwanted, like I was on a game show that wasn’t based on mere luck or smarts but on audience applause only. Jump when they say jump, run when they say run, a puppet of the string the world pulls me around on, yanking me in five million different directions. All the while, none of them feeling like me. The real me. Thank goodness that is all just an accurate description of what being chosen is not. Instead, we do not have to “earn” the applause of the world or of God! It is purely a gift that comes without strings attached. Your behavior has nothing to do with the fact that God chose you– and even more so, He knew ahead of time all that you would do in your lifetime. We can let go of trying to hold it all together, trying to get in our spiritual to-do lists or else, striving to feel enough. This is where we let go of our feelings and not let them ever get a priority here — this space is for truth being swallowed whole — as undeserving as it “feels” and honoring God by walking in this truth. I am not saying this is easy to do, but as a sisterhood and with God’s help, I have done it! And really girls, if I can do it– unlikely believer and Miss Independent– than YOU can too! I promise. Hang onto this truth.. “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart; I called you by name.” Jeremiah 1:5. You don’t have to strive any longer.

Being chosen is receiving a royal position because of His grace. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9. It is purely a gift. Being chosen by God is more like receiving a position on the team you don’t deserve to be part of, yet because you are God’s, you are deserving of it. It’s not having to chase everyone down to believe in you or your dreams, and instead knowing you are worthy of being pursued by the right people. I came to understand this feeling of being chosen when I noticed God’s protection of me in areas of my life I would have been reckless in. Take for example, the years of dating I did on and off. Most of the time the Lord would lead men right out of my life if they were not part of His plan. Although I felt rejected for a short time, the Lord always reminded me that because I am chosen, He cannot assign me to join a person who will not uphold that call in my life. Maybe you didn’t get a job you thought you were worthy of. Instead of seeing it as a rejection and allowing it to doubt your worth, ponder that it could have led to a place that there isn’t a deeper purpose for you. God knows that His chosen ones deserve best. But many times we don’t recognize God’s best as our best. Funny how that happens, huh? Thankfully, He reminds us otherwise and we eventually see later on down the road why we didn’t get this or get that — and we are usually very thankful in that moment. Being chosen isn’t about getting what we want, but more about living for the purpose of a greater call.

Chosen is being called out and set-apart for an eternal purpose. When things don’t add up and you don’t feel part of “the club” — this is when you can recognize that you are not part of the club for a reason!!! Have you heard the saying based off of scripture, “In the world, but not of the world” — I see so many bumper stickers that say “NOTW” which stand for “Not of This World” — some people who are grasping onto this identity thing! You are here for a reason and purpose, not to try to fit in. So stop, let go. Ask yourself what are you here for? What has God called you to do? I always like to fill in the blank with my passions, the things that really get me excited. Being alive in Christ is living out the unique way He made you with your own distinct talents and gifts. Don’t get caught up thinking your gift is not spiritual enough–remember, God uses every single trade, career, passion and service there is! You do not have to work in a church or be a missionary to have an “eternal purpose”! Just live your life in a way that pleases God by doing what you love– that is not a hard calling is it?! NO! For me, it is the place my dreams soar–I can run wild with the things that light my fire and trust that God will use them to be glorified in. Being chosen has made me feel more alive than ever. I have known women as teachers, bloggers, hair stylists, fashion designers, business women, stay-at-home mamas, artists, cooks, and many more unique gifts that brought glory and fame to Jesus. Don’t change who you are – embrace it.

We can identify with being chosen when we can recognize that our life may be shaped and led a certain way because of the amazing, eternal plans God has for us. Sometimes things don’t go our way, but that doesn’t mean that we are forgotten, instead it may simply mean you are chosen for more. Chosen for greater. Chosen for deeper. Chosen for a purpose. To be chosen is to be set-apart. What are we set-apart for? You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. John 15:16. To know God and to be part of His eternal calling… to bear fruit and be given whatever we ask– really it’s like God is saying we can get all of our needs met here– knowing and loving people and knowing and loving God. This is the only place I have ever been truly satisfied no matter how much my flesh wants to fight this truth and whine for worldliness. Being alive for the purposes of God and living in them are what has brought more joy to me than years of doing things my way.

Consider it blessed friends, that you are chosen and loved by a God who surely knows your hearts live-for desires. He knows you and he set you apart for all that goodness and more.

Hope you will continue to hang around with me more on this journey of discovering what we are made of.

Food for thought:

  • Do you identify yourself as a chosen daughter of God? Do you struggle with tangibly living this out?
  • Does this seem like a far out of reach concept when life treats you more like you need to fight to stand out or be picked?
  • How does social media play into negative/positive self talk of yourself?

You are so worthy,

Jessica

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. Ephesians 1:3-4

“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.” Isaiah 43:10
